I typically wash my hair every 3 days because it is very long. But I saw online that people can go years without washing their hair. I was very intrigued and wondered if washing hair is even necessary. So I am challenging myself to not wash my hair for a week. So I’m going and try to answer my question. What happens if you don’t wash your hair for a week?
Here are the rules I set for myself to experiment what happens if I don’t wash my hair for a week.
1. no washing with shampoo for a week
2. no extra smoothing products for a week e.g oils
3. no rinsing with water
Day 1- Saturday
My hair was washed very well yesterday using lush shampoo and conditioner. I dried it very well using a hairdryer and now my hair is bouncy and oil free. I have just used a clip to tie up my hair. I didn’t sweat at all today, I did go for a nice walk and then chilled at home.
Day 2- Sunday
Firstly, I’m so excited to say that it snowed a little today. And in terms of my hair, it’s getting oily. The top of my hair where my parting is, doesn’t look oily. Underneath, my hair is looking streaky with oils. But it is very light and not as itchy as third day hair.
Day 3- Monday
My hair is getting streaky. I can still style it but the oils are becoming more visible. Usually this is when I will consider to wash my hair today or tomorrow. I have tied it up in a bun using a clamp and have stayed home for online lessons. So basically, I haven’t done much today and so my hair isn’t getting any dirt from exercise.
Day 4- Tuesday
Soooo, today has been a very itchy day. I have been seeing a little bit of grime and sebum when I scratch my head. Usually, today I would be washing my hair and I am very tempted to do so right now, but for science I will not. But I must say, the ends of my hair are very nice and shiny. That must mean the oils are being distributed and making my hair look good. Well at least the end of my hair looks lush. Currently, the top and underneath, my hair is sticking together and just really oily. It is becoming more difficult to style the hair nicely because you can see the streaky oils and it isn’t pretty. So today I have just had to do with the classic low ponytail. When I go for my walk, I will cover my head with a beanie.
Day 5- Wednesday
Okay, I felt less itchy but in the morning I did have a scratchathon. So my hair is still silky at the ends and oily and the top. And luckily I don’t have any dandruff or serious odor so that’s good. I went out and to cover my oily head I put on my beanie because it doesn’t look clean. I am actually really proud of myself for getting this far into the challenge. And I can’t wait to shoot up maybe four or five in the morning on Friday to wash my hair on Chinese New Year.
Day 6- Thursday
Chinese New Year’s eve yay! I have already cleaned the home and the stairs so no need to it it tomorrow. And I tied up my hair in a ponytail so it didn’t get too dirty. But at least I know for sure tomorrow I am washing my hair. I feel like I will use the rice water solution on my hair to give it some nutrients and shine.
Day 7- Friday
Woooo hooooo! I have finally gotten my answer to what happens if I don’t wash my hair for a week. And I found my hair distributes its oil over time and the hair is weakened. Moreover my hair felt clumped together and I had little pimples on the scalp. And I waited at night just to keep my promise of washing my hair on Day 7. And on midnight or so, I went to wash my hair using a liquid shampoo and some rice water, then conditioned my hair using the lush conditioner bar. I felt the bounce spring back into my hair and the odor went away. And m mum even touched my hair for the first time this week which is a sign that it is very clean.
I think realistically if you wanted to you can train your hair to last a little longer each week , so maybe one day you can wash your hair once a week. For me, I think I’m going to stick to washing my hair every 3-4 days.
